Science Fiction Foundation announces 2009 AGM

The 2009 AGM will take place at Conway Hall, 25 Red Lion Square, London, on Saturday 27th June 2009.

This is being run as part of a Joint Event with the British Science Fiction Association.

The SFF is pleased to announce that Paul Kincaid will be our Guest for the day. Paul is the author of What It Is We Do When We Read Science Fiction, which is on the short-list for the 2009 Hugo Award for Best Related Book, and has been nominated for numerous other awards. The day will run from 10 am - 4 pm, with an events timetable as follows:

The Third Annual Science Fiction Foundation Masterclass

Location: University of Liverpool
Dates: June 10th, 11th and 12th, 2009

Class Leaders: Joan Gordon, Adam Roberts, Paul Kincaid.

The Science Fiction Masterclass is held in conjunction with the University of Liverpool. The aim of the Masterclass is to provide those who have a serious interest in sf criticism with the opportunity to exchange ideas with leading figures in the field, and also to use the SFF Collection.

The Masterclass will take place from June 10-12th at the University of Liverpool. Each full day of the Masterclass will consist of morning and evening classes, with afternoons free to prepare. Class leaders for 2009 will be Joan Gordon, Adam Roberts, and Paul Kincaid.

Applicants must provide a short CV of either: academic credentials, essay/book publications, reviews and writing sample (this may be from a blog); all of these will be valued equally as we are looking for a mixture of experiences and approaches. A range of hotel recommendations will be forwarded to those accepted.

Applications will be assessed by an Applications Committee consisting of Peter Wright, Joan Haran, and Farah Mendlesohn.

Completed applications must be received by 31st January 2009.

AGM details (2008)

Date: Saturday 7th June
Venue: Conway Hall, Red Lion Square (nearest underground: Holborn)
Doors open 10.30 am.
SFF AGM: 12.30 pm to 1 pm.
BSFA AGM: 2 pm to 2.30 pm.
Close (and decamp to pub) at around 5 pm.
The SFF Guest will be Geoff Ryman, and the BSFA Guest will be Peter Weston. The BSFA's part of the event will in particular be focussing on the 50th anniversary of the BSFA.

The Second, Annual, Science Fiction Foundation Masterclass - Change of Venue

Location: Seven Sisters, London

Dates: June 20 th, 21 st, and 22 nd (that's Friday, Saturday, Sunday).

The Science Fiction Foundation Masterclass will be held in Seven Sisters, London, where the James/Mendlesohn collection of critical works will be available, and will be supplemented by a visit to the famous Clute Cellar.

Applications are now closed for this year's event but the 2009 Masterclass is planned to return to Liverpool. Details will be announced here.

Science Fiction Foundation announces AGM

SFF AGM: 1.30pm - 2pm, Saturday 16th June.

Location: The Old Queens Head, 40 Pond Hill, Sheffield S1 2BD (close to Sheffield rail station).

Being run as part of a Joint AGM Event with the BSFA, 11 am - 4 pm. Guests to be announced; all events and the AGMs will take place in the first floor function room. The Queens Head can be contacted on 0114 2798383 for queries regarding access.

Science Fiction Foundation announces SF Criticism Masterclass for 2007

The Science Fiction Foundation (SFF) will be holding the first of an annual Masterclass in sf criticism in 2007.

The SFF is launching this new venture in conjunction with the University of Liverpool, which hosts its book collection within the university library. The aim of the Masterclass is to provide those who have a serious interest in sf criticism with the opportunity to exchange ideas with leading figures in the field, and also to use the SFF Collection.

The first Masterclass will take place from June 19-22, 2007 at the University of Liverpool. Each full day of the Masterclass will consist of morning and evening classes, with afternoons free to use the SFF Collection. Class leaders for 2007 will be Andrew M. Butler, Joan Haran, and Brian Stableford. Delegate costs will be £180 per person, excluding accommodation; accommodation (at a local hotel) will be booked through the Masterclass with current rates being £59.50 (single)/ £79.50 (twin).

Applicants should write to Farah Mendlesohn at farah.sf@gmail.com. Applicants will be asked to provide a CV and writing sample; these will be assessed by an Applications Committee consisting of Farah Mendlesohn, Paul Kincaid, Andy Sawyer, and Roger Luckhurst.
