The Collection is housed in the Special Collections Department in the Sydney Jones Library at the University of Liverpool, and consists of some 25,000 books and magazines in the field of Science Fiction and related genres, such as fantasy and horror. This is supplemented by an extensive stock of critical works, both books and journals and a number of special collections in its care. This can be accessed through the SF Hub. For the first time in many years the Collection has a full-time Librarian/Administrator, Andy Sawyer, who is also Reviews Editor of Foundation: The International Review of Science Fiction.
Funding from the Higher Education Council of England in 1995 allowed two members of staff, Paul Watry and Peter Johnston, to work on cataloguing the Collection for two years. Over 19,000 records of English-language fiction, over 1,000 records for periodicals (magazines, critical journals and fanzines) and an index was compiled of 5,500 articles, reviews and other relevant material appearing in critical journals and fanzines. This material will be made available via our web pages and the University of Liverpool's Online Public Access Catalogue. This database will extend the Collection's usefulness to scholars and researchers. It is already proving invaluable for visitors and our own students. The Science Fiction Foundation Collection also supports the University of Liverpool's MA in Science Fiction Studies and we work actively to extend our role as a resource for the promotion of Science Fiction and its use in education, providing consultancy facilities to the media.
The Collection is housed on rolling stacks in the Special Collections department of the Sydney Jones Library. Use is restricted only in the sense that it is a reference-only collection, although arrangements for consultation must be made by arrangement with the Librarian/Administrator. Subject to the copyright regulations and the scale of charges of the University Library it may be possible to photocopy specific items.
